Fintech Industrial Abrasives sells aluminum oxide, zirconia, and silicon carbide sanding discs. All types of abrasive grains are available in a multitude of different sizes and grits.
Aluminum oxide is considered the workhorse of the abrasive world. It is the least expensive and most common type of sanding disc. Aluminum oxide discs are good for most wood and metal applications.
Silicon carbide discs are better suited for grinding rubber, cast iron, titanium alloys, and glass. The grains on silicon carbide discs are designed to continually fracture, which creates new cutting edges for fast stock removal.
Zirconia (also referred to as zirc or zirconia alumina) discs are ideal for coarse to medium grit metal applications and work best under high pressure.
The best type of abrasive to buy will vary depending on your application. If you’re unsure which type of abrasive would be best for your application, you can speak to one of our abrasive technicians at (888) 223-8768 for help.
We sell sanding discs with paper, cloth, and film backings. Paper backings are the lightest and most widely used type of backing. However, they may not always be the best option. Paper can be prone to tearing and generally less suitable for certain applications.
When heavy stock removal is the goal, cloth backings are likely a better choice for backing. Cloth backings can also withstand exposure to grease and oil, which makes them ideal for wet polishing applications.
Film backings are the best of both worlds. Film can be lightweight and flexible like paper, but can also be tear resistant and waterproof like cloth. Film products are ideal for metalworking, especially in the automotive industry.
Our abrasive technicians are available to help if you’re unsure which type of backing would be ideal for your needs.
If you’re looking for sanding discs for wood sanding, there’s one abrasive grain type you’ll want to be shopping for. The best sanding discs for woodworking will be open coat aluminum oxide discs. Aluminum oxide is very friable and will fragment when sanding wood. This fragmentation increases the working life of the belt. The open coating is also beneficial for wood sanding. An open coating means that there is more empty space between the abrasive grains. This empty space prevents dust and debri from clogging the belt. Dust accumulation is a common problem with wood sanding, which is reduced with the open coating.
Metal is a strong material, which requires an equally strong abrasive grain to sand. Fintech offers two different options if you’re looking for sanding discs for metal finishing: closed coat aluminum oxide and zirconia. The best sanding discs for metalworking would be zirconia discs. Zirconia is stronger and more durable than aluminum oxide. It will have an easier time sanding metal and will also last longer. For these reasons, zirconia will provide the best return on your investment.
The type of sanding disc you should be using will be entirely dependent on what you’re finishing or grinding. Our products are conveniently categorized by application. You can browse sanding discs for metal finishing, scissor sharpening, wood, wet sanding, and auto body work. Our abrasive technicians are available to help you choose the right discs for your application if you’d like assistance.
Many of our products are made-to-order. If you don’t see the size you’re looking for, you can request a quote for a custom order. We can custom manufacture our sanding discs to be any size. Simply call (888) 223-8768 or fill out a custom order form to receive a quote.
