Selecting The Right Abrasive Grain For Your Drum Sander Rolls

Fintech Abrasives offers drum sander rolls with two different abrasive grains: open coat aluminum oxide and zirconia. The best abrasive grain to choose will depend on your use.

Open coat aluminum oxide works well for sanding softer materials like softwoods. Redwood, Cedar, Southern Pine, and Douglas Fir would all be examples of softwoods. The open coating provides more space between abrasive grains, which can prevent residue from softer materials from clogging the sanding strips. It can also provide more airflow to keep sanding surfaces cool.

Zirconia is the better choice for harder materials like hardwoods. Examples of hardwoods include Maple, Walnut, Cherry, Hickory, Oak, and Mahogany. Zirconia is a stronger abrasive grain with a faster cut rate. It is much easier to sand harder materials with Zirconia. Using a harder abrasive grain like zirconia on harder materials also helps the abrasive strips last longer.

Replacing Drum Sander Strips

Replacing drum sander strips is a pretty easy process. The steps will vary depending on the drum sanding model. Some drum sanders will use a velcro backing while others use clamps on both ends to hold the sandpaper in place. Below is a rough outline of the steps involved to replace your sanding strip. Again, the steps vary slightly by model.

  1. Remove the top cover from your drum sander.

  2. Loosen the clamp screws holding your strips to the drum.

  3. Unroll and remove the sandpaper from the drum.

  4. Secure the angle for the new sanding strip into the left clamp of the drum sander.

  5. Start to roll the drum so that the strip wraps around the drum. Continue to do this until you’ve wrapped the strip around the full length of the drum.

  6. Clamp the other end of the strip into the right clamp of the drum sander and resecure the top cover of the drum sander before use.

If you’re having difficulty replacing your drum sanding strip, you can contact our abrasive technicians. Our technicians may be able to help walk you through installation based on your drum sander model.
